Low paid workers at Picturehouse’s Ritzy cinema in Brixton, south London, were set to strike on Thursday of this week from 6.30pm.
The Bectu union members are battling their millionaire boss, and multibillion pound Cineworld owners, for a rise in their hourly wage from £7.24 to £8.80 an hour.
They struck for three days in April.
Picket lines had a steady stream of solidarity visits from trade unionists and local residents and cinema goers.
The Ritzy trades off its image as a progressive, independent local cinema.
But while the company’s profits, bosses’ pay and cinema prices have risen the workers have seen nothing.
The dispute is popular with the local Brixton community. Many Ritzy members have pledged their support and called for a boycott until bosses pay a living wage.
This week’s Ritzy strike takes place as lecturers at nearby Lambeth College begin an indefinite strike against contracts that impose worse pay and conditions (see page 7).
There is a chance to link up these disputes and increase the solidarity for both.
