Workers at Lambeth College are on strike today,Thursday, against hated new contracts.

The UCU union members had planned to begin an indefinite strike today. But bosses got an injunction to stop them, so a one day walkout went ahead instead.Pickets gathered at all of the South London college's sites this morning. It was clear that the injunction hasn't demoralised people but it's made some more determined to fight.

Angus was picketing in Clapham. "The injunction could backfire on them," he told Socialist Worker.

“People are really angry and I think more will join the union.”

Workers plan to re ballot for indefinite action.“It's just made us more determined,” said Kim, another picket. They've spent all this money on the courts just to delay us for a few weeks."

Striker Jean said, “We'll probably get an even stronger vote when we re ballot.

"It will just harden up opinion.”

The union's original ballot showed a strong mood to fight–with a 95 percent vote for action on a 70 percent turnout.

Striker Johnny said, “That's a better turnout than most general elections. It shows how strongly people feel.”

New workers, many who change their hours or jobs, face new contracts that snatch holiday time and sick pay from them.

Bosses want to force workers to work longer too.

Workers from other unions including the NUT and Unison visited pickets today to show support. They brought collections and food for strikers.

Lecturers from other colleges came too. And at Clapham, a worker in another union brought out teas and coffees for pickets in the pouring rain.

Strikers are confident. When asked if they could win Jean replied, "Oh yes. We're solid."
