London housing meeting voices anger at private landlords

Issue No. 2402

Over 100 people came to a meeting on London’s Housing crisis called by Waltham Forest and Redbridge trades councils on Wednesday of last week.

The meeting was addressed by Eileen Short from Defend Council Housing and Rosie Walker from a local private renters group.

Labour councillors supported calls for rent controls and more council housing. Many tenants voiced frustration with Labour. Ben Morris from the NUT said that “the meeting shows the potential for a movement across London.”

Tenants and activists in Haringey, north London, were set to meet on Tuesday of this week against plans to demolish thousands of council homes. The council wants to spend £1.5 million on plans agreed with private developers.
