Resistance and repression on world’s May Day marches

Issue No. 2402

Hundreds of thousands of people marched and rallied for International Workers’ Day on Thursday of last week.

In Greece it coincided with a general strike and tens of thousands marched in Athens.

There was fighting in the streets of Istanbul. Cops attacked marchers to keep them out of Taksim Square where mass protests took place last year.

Russia’s government organised a pro-Putin demonstration in Moscow, but gay rights protesters also marched in St Petersburg.

There were massive trade union marches against austerity in France and Spain. 

Factory workers led an opposition march in Cambodia and tens of thousands opposed the jailing of an opposition leader for “sodomy” in Malaysia.
