Lecturers must be part of the resistance

Issue No. 2405

Organising maximum solidarity for the indefinite strike at Lambeth College will be a big part of the backdrop at the UCU union’s annual congress in Manchester this week.

UCU Left supporters will argue that lecturers need to be part of the resistance to attacks on workers.

Higher education workers recently voted to call off a pay dispute for minimal gain. The mismanagement of this dispute left members with a choice of a poor deal or continuing a poorly-led dispute.

But in further education colleges there is still a live ballot. There is the potential for us to formally reject the latest insulting offer of

0.7 percent this week and join the action on 10 July.

At congress UCU Left supporters will argue that we can’t fight cuts college by college or university by university. We need national industrial action, a national campaign against funding cuts and escalating strikes.

Supporters of the “Independent Broad Left”, with sections of the union’s national leadership, are proposing motions that would undermine democracy. UCU Left is campaigning hard against these.

  • UCU left candidate Loraine Monk came second in the UCU vice president election with 45 percent of the vote
