One week into the all-out strike at
Strikers gathered today, Tuesday, for their daily rally at the Clapham campus. They announced that they had raised £10,000 from collections and donations for their strike fund.
This will be used to help strikers with travel and childcare during the dispute.
In addition their UCU union has agreed to pay striking members £50 a day.
Strikers have quickly become organised and have elected committees for picket duties, strike pay, press and entertainment.
They have also produced a leaflet with ten facts about the dispute to counter management’s lies. They are particularly angry about spiteful claims that most of those on the picket line were not
Strikers have been lifted by the fact that Unison members were set to join the picket line tomorrow to begin a two-day strike.
Mandy Brown, branch secretary of Lambeth College UCU, told Socialist Worker, “The collection is amazing. We’re getting more and more people coming out and joining the picket line. I’ve seen at least three or four new faces today.
“The big thing is Unison coming out with us. That’s given us a boost.”
Strikers are keen to connect their dispute with other fighting workers. They sent a delegation to an NUT union rally today.
Strikers are travelling
Angus is a lecturer at the Clapham site and has worked at the college for more than 25 years.
“I’m off to Sheffield,
“I’m looking forward to that. It’s good to go around the country and speak to different branches and get their support.
“If this principal/chief executive wins this dispute others will be doing the same. The mood is positive with an undercurrent of determination."

Visit picket lines from 7am every day in Brixton, Clapham and Vauxhall and a mass meeting each day at 11am at the Clapham site.
