Tories get defensive over racist Operation Centurion raids

by Ken Olende
Issue No. 2407

Operation Centurion has targeted many migrants working without papers. But it has not been the big success the Tories had planned.

Socialist Worker exclusively revealed plans for the racists raids two weeks ago.

Groups including Anti-Raids Network organised to warn potential victims of the coming raids. Sites raided include Indian restaurants in Chippenham and Wiltshire, premises in York and the Sandwich Company in Walsall.

The Home Office has been forced into a defensive position. It argues that its enforcement “does not engage in racial profiling and any suggestion to this effect is both abhorrent and completely without foundation.”

Its spokesperson continued, “We have worked carefully with employers who share the public’s concerns about illegal working.”

However, documents Socialist Worker has seen do comment on the background of the suspected “illegal” workers.

A planned raid on an East London construction firm describes the workers as “10-15 IND [Indian] nationals, 9-5 pm (Sikhs, no hard hats)”. One for Wales openly states, “Alleged to be ERI [Eritrean] nationals working (not the best nationality for us but a new sector nonetheless)”.
