Yarl’s Wood immigration removal centre near Bedford faces new allegations of sexual harassment and neglect.

The Home Affairs Select Committee said last week that it will interview former detainees about their complaints—including those who have been deported.

For example, a Ugandan woman said she made a written complaint about a guard’s demand for sex.

Serco, which runs the centre, said it has no record of this.

However, it admitted investigating 31 cases of “inappropriate sexual behaviour”. It has sacked ten people over the issue.

Mental health nurse Noel Finn told BBC Radio 4’s File on Four that the culture there made him resign.

He described one incident where he assessed a woman as suffering “terrible anxiety”.

No action was taken and the next day she poured a kettle of boiling water over herself.

“The system wasn’t driven for mental health,” Noel said. “It was more driven about, ‘Are they physically fit to fly?’”
