Keeping up the pressure over tax

Anti bedroom tax protesters in Manchester lobbied Tory MP Eric Pickles as he defended the hated tax at the landlords’ Chartered Institute of Housing conference on Thursday of last week. 

In Glasgow activists protested that the city council is not paying everyone the Discretionary Housing Payment. This would lift them out of the bedroom tax, even though the Scottish government has allocated the funding.


Thousands out for London Pride demo

Over 20,000 young and old joined the Pride parade through central London last Saturday. 

The NUT and Unite unions joined with campaign buses. 

A new statement by leading LGBT trade unionists against the homophobia of the racist Ukip party got an enthusiastic response.


BBC workers ballot for pay strikes

BBC workers are being balloted to strike over pay, after management failed to make a meaningful improvement to its offer.

The workers are members of the Bectu, NUJ and Unite unions. The ballot began on Thursday of last week and ends on 15 July.


Ritzy workers vote to continue struggle

Bectu union members at the Ritzy Picturehouse cinema in south London have returned a thumping 95 percent vote to continue their dispute.

They are set to strike on Sunday of this week for the eighth time in their long running campaign.

The workers demand bosses pay them the London Living Wage of £8.80 an hour.

Bectu has called for a boycott of Picturehouses, which is backed by the TUC.


Protest held over media bias in poll

Over 1,000 people from across Scotland protested outside the headquarters of BBC Scotland on Sunday of last week.

The protest was called over bias in news reporting of the independence referendum campaign and is the second to be held in a month.


Rail union calls for safety probe

The RMT union has called for the rail safety regulator to probe a Heathrow Express boss working in a job they were not trained to do. 

RMT argues safety was put at risk.
