Protest to save the Charlie Reid centre

Care Crisis campaigners and supporters of the Charlie Reid centre protested  against cuts to day centres in Glasgow last week.

The Charlie Reid centre offers a mental health drop in service and has been closed by Glasgow City Council.

Campaigners cast a wreath into the Clyde river to to protest at the grave state of care due to the cuts.

Prisoners’ anger over jail conditions

Around 120 prisoners took part in a protest lasting several hours at Nottinghamshire’s Ranby prison on Saturday of last week. 

It started when inmates on one wing refused to return to their cells. 

The protest continued into the evening, with prisoners taking control of a unit and starting a fire. 

Sweltering conditions inside jail cells sparked the demonstrations on Monday of last week. 

Prisoners were protesting against conditions after being denied the right to wash and exercise.

Fury over plans to cut journalist jobs

Journalists have reacted with anger at plans to cut 200 jobs at Richard Desmond’s the Daily and Sunday Express and Star titles.

 The cuts will reduce the workforce from 650 to 450. Workers, who are in the NUJ union, are supporting a motion condemning the cuts. 

They have come as Desmond received £450 million for the sale of Channel 5.
