An email leaked to the Bolton News has revealed that “three union representatives, including two high-ranking Unison members, have been suspended from their posts in Bolton council”.
Bernadette Gallagher, the branch secretary of Bolton branch, is on Unison’s NEC, as is senior steward Janet Bryan.
As a result of complaints from stall holders in Bolton market the council is carrying out an investigation into actions by strikers during the strike on 10 July. A group of strikers leafleted the market asking people to boycott it as there were no “health and safety officers, fire wardens and cleaners on site”.
The suspensions are a disgraceful attack on trade unionists and will need a response from the trade union movement.
