The Unite union has declared victory in a pay dispute at EDF Energy, which involved a series of strikes by 500 workers.
The company has agreed to a 2 percent pay rise backdated to 2013 and a lump sum of up to £480 for all workers.
The dispute also centred on promises that were made in 2012 and later deemed too expensive, which have now been addressed.
South eastern region workers, currently paid less than their colleagues, are to have an additional offer to move them closer to pay parity.
And eastern region revenue protection workers are to be included in the deal, as well as having their full earnings counted as salary rather than a portion as “additional payments”.
This is a vindication of the decision to strike, and to threaten more strikes if demands weren’t met. However, Unite previously criticised the 2 percent offer as a real terms pay cut from a company making big profits.
The larger lump sum only addresses this in the short term. So the real test of the victory will be the talks for a 2014 pay rise, which the company has agreed to start directly. If a better offer is not forthcoming workers should be prepared to strike again.
