Leicester College

IT'S NOW possible to draw a balance sheet of the four-week strike earlier this year by lecturers at Leicester College. The deal now agreed means that management have been forced to retreat from their attack on collective bargaining. All staff will now be put onto the contract that the Natfhe union negotiated. This contract includes a number of gains and an action plan to discuss improvements.

We were unable to get the college to back down over the four-day reduction in holidays, although this is now to be phased in over several years and will include a "self managed" day. Staff will receive a one-off payment of £1,800 for lost holidays.

Overall, while we did not achieve everything we were hoping for, we beat back a serious offensive by management. Our union branch is in a much stronger position. None of this would have been possible without the solidarity offered by the wider trade union movement. Our branch has vowed to return that solidarity. Our reps are organising collections for the Scottish nursery nurses' dispute.
