Your Choice Barnet care workers strike against pay cut

Issue No. 2419

Care workers at Your Choice Barnet (YCB) in north London are set to strike on Monday and Tuesday of next week against a 9.5 percent pay cut.

Four further strike days were also set to be announced.

YCB is a council-controlled, outsourced company set up over two years ago. Since then bosses have slashed pay and got rid of around a third of staff.

Following a strike threat two months ago, the firm temporarily suspended the wage cut for talks. The talks revealed that YCB had to borrow £1 million—around a fifth of its budget—from Barnet Homes, also controlled by Barnet Council. This was to be repaid at commercial interest rates over the next three years.

Barnet Unison branch chair Helen Davies told Socialist Worker, “Workers are really angry. The firm never had any prospects of being successful without making workers pay for its low budget.”
