FE College lecturers in the University and College Union are being consulted over a 1 percent pay offer from the employers’ national body, the Association of Colleges.
College staff have seen pay decline by around 16 percent since 2009 even before the latest below-inflation offer. Principals and senior managers, however, have paid themselves rises well above inflation during the same period.
Colleges have also cut the proportions they spend on staff salaries.
The email consultation lasts until Wednesday of next week and will be followed by a special meeting of the union’s Further Education Committee (FEC) on Friday. In June the FEC voted to reject and the consultation material calls for rejection. UCU Left activists in the colleges are encouraging a no vote.
If members vote no the Special FEC meeting could vote for industrial action including FE teachers joining with other public sector workers on 14 October.

Lambeth dispute can win
UCU union members at Lambeth College were set to meet on Wednesday of this week to discuss their ongoing dispute with bosses.
The workers struck for over five weeks at the south London college last term against hated new contracts.
Principal Mark Silverman is imposing contracts that increase working hours, slash sick pay and cut holidays.
He has callously threatened to get rid of entire courses if workers take any further action to defend their conditions.
The threat shows that workers’ action had him rattled. Strikers won enormous support for their action last term from trade unionists across Britain.
Donations to their strike fund plus support from the national union helped to sustain the action.
Workers have the power to win—they should use it.
