Sweden’s racist right make gains

Issue No. 2421

Sweden’s Social Democrats came top in the general election last Sunday, but did not get an absolute majority.

The balance of power is now held by the far right Sweden Democrats who took 49 seats with 13 percent of the vote. This is up from 5.7 percent in 2010.

The Social Democrats’ leader Stefan Lofven says he will not work with the racist, anti-immigrant party.

He is likely to become prime minister in a minority government, replacing a Tory coalition.
