Academies schools are grabbing our cash

Academy trusts and their firms are grabbing “very large sums of public money” with little accountability, according to a new report.

The research from London’s Institute of Education highlighted “loopholes” and “conflicts of interest” in a number of academies.

The Academy Enterprise Trust (AET) paid nearly £500,000 into the private business interests of its trustees and executives over the past three years.

The payments were for services such as HR consultancy.

The AET plans to “outsource” all non-teaching workers across its 77 schools to a for-profit organisation.

Another trust, the Aurora Academies Trust, paid £100,000 to its parent company Mosaica Education to use its curriculum.

The report said the academy system “lacks transparency and is overly politicised”.

Tory education secretary Nicky Morgan will give evidence to an inquiry into academy schools next month.
