The racist English Defence League (EDL) attempted to exploit the recent child sex abuse scandals last Saturday in central London.

Police facilitated a march of 200 racists from Trafalgar Square to Downing Street in Westminster.

The EDL protest contained Nazis from various groups.

Unite Against Fascism (UAF) organised a counter protest opposite Downing Street. Around 150 people took part through the day.

Lee Boorman, a student at King’s College London, told Socialist Worker, “Taking your eye off fascism is always going to end badly if you give them any breathing space. We have to put up resistance to them.”

Speakers from the RMT, GMB, CWU, NUS and PCS unions stressed the importance of opposing the EDL wherever they go.

Cathy Cross from the PCS said, “Every time the EDL come to our streets we have to be there fighting them.”

This was the second time in two weeks that the Nazis sought to gain from the horrific child abuse that happened in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Some 700 rampaged through Rotherham the previous Saturday, attacking a local mosque.

“We cannot be complacent,” said Weyman Bennett, joint secretary of UAF. “The EDL are down but not out. We always have to be standing tall against them.”

UAF is organising a counter protest against the EDL in Birmingham on 11 October.
