University workers prepare to fight over pensions

Issue No. 2423

The UCU union is balloting workers in 67 universities for action against attacks on the USS pension scheme.

The ballot begins on Wednesday of this week and ends on 20 October.

The union is asking workers to back a marking boycott and to refuse to set exams in protest at the attacks. The bosses’ association, Universities UK, wants to scrap the final salary and career average schemes that make up the USS scheme in older universities.

Research commissioned by the union shows that some lecturers could lose 27 percent of their pension if the bosses’ plans go ahead.
