Lecturers to begin marking boycott

Issue No. 2427

Lecturers in 69 universities were set to begin a marking boycott from Thursday of next week in a row over pensions.

The action involves UCU union members in older universities. Workers are fighting to defend their USS pension scheme.

Bosses wasted no time in threatening to deduct whole days’ pay for workers taking part in the action short of a strike.

Workers backed action short of a strike by 87 percent in a recent ballot on a turnout of 45 percent. Some 78 percent also supported strikes.

Bosses want to scrap final salary schemes and move towards career average schemes. This will slash the value of pensions. The union should fight to defend final salary schemes.
