Pay ballots set to end in local government

by Raymie Kiernan
Issue No. 2429

Voting ends this week in pay consultation ballots of local government workers in England and Wales.

Leaders of the Unison, GMB and Unite unions suspended a strike last month of hundreds of thousands of workers.

They are consulting on a shoddy proposal that is not even an official offer.

Workers rejected and struck against a 1 percent pay offer in July this year. But the new proposal is barely any better— an extra 94p a year per £1,000 earned—and is for two years rather than one.

Dozens of Unison branches have recommended rejection of the proposal.

There is growing support for a recall conference to hold the union leadership to account.
