Travellers fight back as Tories try to redefine away their rights

Issue No. 2429

Travellers and their supporters are fighting government plans to attack Travellers’ rights.

The Tories plan to redefine Gypsies and Travellers, and remove their ethnic status.

They also want to bring in changes to planning law that would cut the provision of sites for Travellers.

Activists say the new plans would remove some Travellers from accommodation needs assessments—meaning councils no longer have to provide for them.

The London Gypsy and Traveller Unit is campaigning against the plans.

A government consultation ends on 23 November.
