Sweet workers are bitter over holidays
The GMB union is set to ballot its 230 members working for food giant Haribo Confectionary in Pontefract, West Yorkshire.
The dispute is centred on Christmas working times, which GMB said have been imposed by bypassing the union.
Home Office protest to rescue refugees
Demonstrators from the Movement Against Xenophobia protested on Thursday of last week outside the Home Office in London.
The Don’t Let Them Drown protest was in opposition to the government’s policy of not supporting rescue operations for refugees in the Mediterranean.
Anti-cuts lobby set for SNP conference
The Scottish Anti Bedroom Tax Federation was set to protest against cuts outside the Scottish National Party’s conference in Perth this Saturday.
They will join an anti-cuts lobby called by Glasgow City Unison branch, supported by Dundee City Unison and PCS Scotland.
Anti bedroom tax activists are also set to protest outside the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff the following week.
HM conference draws big crowd
More than 700 people gathered in London last week for the four days of the 11th annual Historical Materialism (HM) conference.
Its theme was “How capitalism survives”. Delegates debated the economic crisis, imperialism and oppression.
The debate on whether Marxism can deal with issues of oppression was standing room only.
Protest to end fast track deportation
Protesters gathered for the fifth Surround Harmondsworth demonstration at the immigration detention centre near Heathrow Airport last Saturday.
They were demanding an immediate end to Fast Track deportation. The protest was called by the Movement for Justice.
Packed audience for Marxist book launch
Over 100 people packed out the launch of Alex Callinicos’ new book Deciphering Capital in London on Monday of this week.
The panel discussion included Marxist blogger Michael Roberts, professor Chris Arthur and was chaired by writer Gilbert Achcar.
