Ukip immobilised the government in parliament last week, when the Tories created an unnecessary row over a vote they could easily have won.
They wouldn’t call a vote on the European Arrest Warrant because they didn’t want their backbenchers to rant on Europe.
The surreal level of spin such discussions have reached was also seen in the response to a new report, The Fiscal Effects of Immigration to the UK.
It unequivocally states that migration has financially benefited the economy.
But the Sun newspaper reported, “Immigration has cost the country nearly £115 BILLION since the mid 1990s — a landmark report revealed.”
Meanwhile the Telegraph newspaper moaned that the report said immigration has “cost £120 billion”.
The report itself sets out to demolish the arguments the right rely on.
In fact, it singles out new immigrants from the European Union as a benefiting the economy.
Socialist Worker supports unlimited immigration even if there was no financial benefit to the British economy.
The tragedy in British mainstream politics is that no one, including the Labour leadership, seems at all interested in opposing the prejudice and politics of Ukip.
That makes it more important for socialists everywhere to stand up to Ukip and offer an alternative to its racist scapegoating.
