UCU activists demand action to defend USS pension scheme

Issue No. 2432

UCU union members are fighting to push union leaders to defend their USS pension scheme.

University bosses want to tear up the scheme and scrap the final salary element of it – stealing thousands from workers’ pensions.

The UCU leadership recently called off a marking boycott across 69 universities that had got bosses rattled. Prior to this, the UCU had made a counter-proposal on pensions that also scrapped the final salary element.

Many union members are angry at the retreats made by their union leaders. Workers have voted clearly for action to defend pensions and want the union to respect their decision.

Several university UCU branches have passed a motion calling on the union to arrange a special conference to discuss the dispute. A group of workers in Liverpool have called a meeting for this Saturday entitled, “Where now for the UCU?”

The Liverpool UCU Network and University of Liverpool UCU called the meeting.

Where now for the UCU? Saturday 6 December, 1.30-3.30pm (1pm for registration and lunch), The Quaker Centre, 22 School Lane (near Church Street), Liverpool L1 3BT
