Wildcat strike threat wins at Tower Hamlets school

by Paul McGarr, NUT rep
Issue No. 2433

Staff at Langdon Park secondary school in Tower Hamlets were celebrating an important victory this week after making a stand against IT corporation Capita.

Staff—from teachers to teaching assistants, admin staff to kitchen workers—rallied against a threat to discipline two IT technicians employed by Capita.

On the day that it became clear one of the technicians faced possible dismissal a large emergency meeting took place.

It voted overwhelmingly that if the planned hearing went ahead and there was any sacking we would immediately strike and seek to publicise the case.

This led to the hearing being postponed and now all threats of dismissal have been lifted.

Our stance has united staff across the school and across unions, and made everyone feel that when we stand together we have real strength.
