It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Lee Goergen, a member of the Southampton branch of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) since 1993.

Lee died unexpectedly, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer.

Until her retirement Lee worked for HMRC and was active in her union, the PCS.

She was a committed member of the SWP and always keen to help with the activity of the branch. She was always compassionate towards people and loved animals. She loved classical music including opera and in particular Berlioz.

She was a quiet but determined and committed socialist.

She had a strong sense of the injustice of class society and the way cuts and closures of services were making worse the lives of ordinary people.

In 2003 Lee stood as a Socialist Alliance candidate for a local council ward.

She was always ready to take part in paper sales.

Lee was paper organiser and subsequently speakers’ organiser in the branch.

A long period of illness made it impossible for her to attend branch meetings. Nevertheless she continued to play a vital role arranging speakers for the meetings.

Lee believed profoundly in the possibility of change and the necessity of socialist revolution.

She will be greatly missed by her husband Gary, his family and the whole branch.
