Care workers at Your Choice Barnet (YCB) in north London were set to strike on Thursday and Friday of this week in a long-running dispute over pay.
YCB is a council-controlled, outsourced company set up over two years ago. Bosses have slashed pay and got rid of around a third of staff. The Unison union members are fighting the imposition of a 9.5 percent pay cut.
They struck for four days last autumn. And in October they resoundingly rejected an offer from bosses to “only” cut their pay by 7.9 percent.
Unison says the council’s actions make it difficult for YCB to remain financially viable without attacking workers. YCB borrowed £1 million from Barnet Homes, also controlled by Barnet Council. The interest rate has contributed to a financial crisis.
