Journalists debate racism in union meeting

Issue No. 2437

Aound 25 media workers joined a discussion on Charlie Hebdo and freedom of speech on Monday of this week. The meeting was organised by the National Union of Journalists London Magazine branch.

Cartoonist Tim Sanders and Hassan Mahamdallie, editor of Critical Muslim, led off a discussion on the notion of freedom of speech and Islamophobic reporting in the media.

The discussion talked about why media workers should not say “we are Charlie” and why satire should poke fun upwards at the rich and powerful.

There was a proposal to launch a media workers’ campaign to combat racism, Islamophobia and anti-migrant reporting.
