Britain’s MPs had the chance to scrap the country’s most barbaric weapons of mass destruction this week. And to their shame most Labour MPs failed to even show their faces.
The Scottish National Party, backed by Plaid Cymru and the Greens, called an opposition day debate against renewing Trident nuclear missiles and submarines.
Even the spineless Lib Dems want to scale down Trident from four submarines to three.
That’s why the Tories have kicked back the vote on Trident to next year. And in a sneaky accounting trick, they’ve moved £261 million of the cost into the “assessment phase” so they can spend it this year anyway.
The US dropped one nuclear bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima killing 80,000 people, with horrible long term effects for tens of thousands more.
Each of Britain’s 160 Trident warheads is eight times more powerful. There are issues that define elections. Labour should make one of them the political choice between £100 billion for Trident or for hospitals and schools.
Instead most Labour MPs said they would not attend the debate and the party’s shadow defence minister will back Trident.
Its leadership cares more for warmongers than the working class.
