Around 40 South Yorkshire Freedom Riders protested in Barnsley on Monday of this week.

They gathered outside the South Yorkshire Region Combined Authority meeting with brushes, brooms and mops. As leading campaigner George Arthur explained, “We want to tell the Labour councillors of South Yorkshire that we will brush aside their failure to resist the Tories’ austerity.

“It’s time for a clean sweep and to get rid of those who are prepared to do the Tories’ dirty work.”

Protesters are angry that the SYRCA has failed to spend any of its £12 million-plus reserves on subsidising free train travel for older people. Instead it is sacking cleaners and Information Office staff from the Transport Interchanges.

Demonstrators marched to Barnsley bus station to protest at the threat to cleaners’ jobs – and pledged to clean up Labour’s mess.
