Members of the Glasgow Care Crisis group occupied Glasgow Council Chambers this morning, Wednesday, in protest at savage cuts to council services.

One of the occupier’s Marion Nisbet explained to Socialist Worker that the protest was “a last ditch appeal to the council to stop these horrendous cuts”.

The protesters handcuffed themselves inside as security quickly locked the doors, fearing the protest would grow. The occupation lasted over an hour.

The Labour-led council will vote tomorrow on a package of cuts worth almost £30 million with much more to come in the next few years. Council leaders have already cut £200 million and 4,000 jobs have been lost over the last five years.

Marion said, “Most people are not aware of the extent of the cuts the council are making – they are causing misery and further isolating vulnerable people.”

Crucial social care and mental health services are among those facing the axe.

“We are going to see more people turning up at A&Es and in police cells – the most vulnerable are being hammered,” Marion said.

Unions have organised a mass lobby of the council’s budget meeting tomorrow, Thursday. They argue the council could use its reserves instead of cutting jobs and services.

They have also pointed to the SNP government’s £444 million underspend last year as another pot of money that could be used to stop cuts.

Marion argued that council leaders “need to get more creative with their budgets and stop attacking the vulnerable people in our city”. She also appealed for people to support the anti-cuts lobby tomorrow.

She said, “Everyone who can make it tomorrow please come along so we can have a united voice to say no to austerity.”
