Storm brews after Met office strikes
Prospect members at the Met Office struck on Thursday of last week over the ongoing pay freeze—their first strike in more than 40 years.
Forecaster Helen Roberts said, “People are increasingly concerned and frustrated. We’ve had a number of years of pay freezes. People are really feeling it.”
Sacked after raising health and safety
Protesters again hit the Crossrail project in London this week. A worker who had been reemployed after a previous protest was sacked after a grievance hearing last week.
The electrician was initially sacked after raising health and safety concerns.

Freedom Riders take protest to York
Some 60 South Yorkshire Freedom Riders protested outside Nothern Rail HQ in York on Monday of this week.
They marched through a snow storm demanding that Northern Rail introduce an annual pass for older people that would cost £10 and give free train travel in return.

Discussing workers’ resistance in China
More than 60 people attended the dayschool China, World Capitalism and Workers’ Resistance organised by the International Socialism journal in Central London last Saturday.
One highlight was Jenny Chan, who worked undercover in China, talking about the horrific reality of life for workers who produce Apple products in Foxconn factories.
Campus-wide call to boycott Israel
Students and staff at London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (Soas) have voted for an academic boycott of Israel.
Soas currently has ties with the Hebrew University, which supported the Israeli attack on Gaza last summer.
In the referendum, organised by the Students’ Union, 73 percent of students and staff who took part supported the boycott.
Palestine activists target Barclays
Protesters shut down a Barclays bank in Edinburgh last Saturday over links to an arms firm. The protesters held placards with the names of children killed during Israel’s assault on Gaza last summer.
