Evicted tenant re-occupies her home in east London

by Dave Sewell
Issue No. 2449

A former council tenant in Newham, east London, re-occupied her former home last Saturday with the help of supporters in the Focus E15 housing campaign.

Jane and her 14 year old daughter had been evicted last month after she fell into rent arrears due to benefit sanctions and cuts.

Colin Yates was at the protest and housewarming celebration. He told Socialist Worker, “It was a really impressive protest. There was music and people were having a party.”

But on Monday night of this week police broke in and arrested leading Focus E15 activist Jasmin Stone on suspicion of squatting. She has since been released on bail.

Contact Jane’s MP Lyn Brown to demand she is rehoused. Call 020 8470 3463, or write to or Lyn Brown MP, 306 High Street, Stratford, London E15 1AJ
