Cockroaches spark student rent strike

Issue No. 2451

Over 150 students living in two halls of residence at Soas university in central London have called a rent strike over their living conditions.

They face water shortages and damaged showers, doors and electric mains—and infestations of cockroaches and mice.

Student Aurora Lyngstad said, “I killed 38 cockroaches on the first day of university. My mum freaked out.

“There were dead and living cockroaches in every room.”

Perhaps this is what landlord Sanctuary Students means by promising “more than just a room”. Students want a full apology and £800 each in compensation.

Activists in Cambridge held a snap protest outside the old Cambridge Water Company depot last Saturday.

Weston Homes is set to redevelop it. Campaigners say it should be turned into a new council estate.
