Hackney council

Issue No. 1831

LABOUR-RUN Hackney council has suspended three key union activists who all face dismissal for alleged gross misconduct. They are Unison joint branch secretaries Brian Debus and Will Leng plus equalities officer John Page.

The three are claimed to be responsible for the production of a draft report into racism in Hackney council. The draft was due to be submitted, after amendments, to the Commission for Racial Equality.

It called for tougher enforcement of the CRE's non-discrimination notice served on the council after a previous report by the union branch. It is crucial that the council is not allowed to get away with these attacks on the union.

Unison officials, regionally and nationally, must give full and active support to the three activists.
