An English Defence League (EDL) march in Lincoln last Saturday was met with an anti-racist counter-protest.
Approximately 120 people joined the EDL march against the construction of a new mosque, claiming that the government is giving the country away to invaders.
Lincoln Against Racism and Fascism (Larf) organised a counter-demo of about 100 people to defend diversity.
Many people speaking on the open mic at the LARF demo agreed that it is important not to fracture the working class with racism and hate, but to unite against the true cause of sub-standard schooling and overstretched healthcare which are down to austerity not immigration.
Last year Lincoln saw a previous demonstration by the EDL and counter-demo by LARF.
Police presence in the city was heavy, but no arrests took place.
The EDL has trying to build on controversy around the mosque, even though it has no public funding, and there has been a mosque in Lincoln for 15 years.
It can be a landmark to promote diversity in Lincoln.
