EIS union calls FE conference in Scotland to debate how to win equal pay

A special one-day conference of the EIS Fela further education (FE) union to debate how to win equal pay across Scotland’s colleges will be held on Friday of next week in Glasgow.

EIS-Fela president John Kelly told Socialist Worker, “Pay negotiations have dragged on for over a year. Our claim for a cost of living rise and a plan to harmonise all FE lecturers’ salaries in Scotland was submitted in October last year.”

College bosses have been resisting a new national bargaining process, which came about because of a major programme of mergers.

The pay gap is up £7,000 and bosses’ measly 1 percent offer does nothing to address this.

It is also identical to the offer previously rejected by lecturers.

John said, “If anything we have been too willing to talk for so long.”

He’s right, what’s needed is action to force college bosses to pay up.

“My own branch sent off motions calling for rejection of the management offer and calling for a campaign of national strikes across Scotland's FE colleges,” he said.

“This is the first year of national bargaining – we need to respond nationally. I urge branches to send large delegations along to it.”
