Injustice after trans prisoner dies in Leeds jail

Issue No. 2481

Vicky Thompson, a 21 year old transgender woman held in a male prison, was found dead on Friday of last week.

Vicky, identified as a woman since her teens.

She said she would take her own life unless moved from HM Prison Leeds.

Ministry of Justice guidelines state that prisoners are placed according to their gender “as recognised by UK law”.

But rules also have to take into account if a person is “sufficiently advanced their gender reassignment process”.

This gross injustice came on Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Campaigners held a vigil in Leeds last Saturday.
