Thousands of climate activists from around the world gathered in Paris last weekend. They were there to attend a Weekend of Alternatives—a counter-conference to the official Cop21 talks.
Workshops and meetings discussed strategies for the climate movement.
There was widespread recognition that whatever deal is reached at the official talks, it will not be enough to tackle the scale of the climate crisis.
There were important debates about building a mass climate movement that doesn’t rely on politicians, and can tie into wider fights against austerity and war.
So meetings on creating climate jobs—which aimed to put trade unions and workers at the heart of any solutions—were important.
Activists from around the world are also heading to Paris next weekend to take part in a day of action this Saturday.
This is despite the state of emergency in France, to show that we aren’t prepared to allow the politicians at Cop21 off the hook.
