Strikes can stop jobs cull at Business, Innovation and Skills department

Issue No. 2491

Tory business secretary Sajid Javid announced the closure of more than 70 Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) department workplaces last week.

The closure of the BIS office in Sheffield had already been announced.

This could see the loss of as many as 250 jobs.

It comes as other civil service workers are also under attack.

Some 150 workers in HM Revenue and Customs face compulsory redundancy as part of the Tories’ plan to close 137 tax offices.

Cuts and closures are also planned in the Department of Work and Pensions, the Department of Health and the Passport Office.

The PCS union has a policy of calling a national ballot for strikes across all departments if compulsory redundancies are made in any section.

It should ballot its members immediately—striking can save jobs.
