PICKETS WERE out in force at social security offices across central and north west London on Monday and Tuesday. Over 1,000 strikers in the PCS civil servants' union were defending union activists Chris Ford and Phil Henry.

Chris and Phil have been disciplined for their role in supporting members during the dispute over health and safety in the government's new Jobcentre Plus scheme. This week's strike closed a number of offices. 'The support for the action is better than our wildest expectations,' said Chris Ford.

It is now vital that the momentum is not lost. Other offices have shown at meetings that they are willing to strike. The PCS national disputes committee should call a ballot of them as soon as possible.
