Workers occupy factory

Issue No. 1825

WORKERS AT a swimwear factory in North Wales began an occupation last week in protest at the company's refusal to pay wages owed to them. The mainly women workers are fighting Fineline Cymru in Rhyl. Elaine Round is one of 30 workers who began the occupation on Thursday of last week.

She explained, 'It all started when a fax was sent saying that the company was going to be put into receivership. Us monthly staff haven't been paid for five weeks, and the weekly staff are going into their second week without money.'

On top of this they heard the boss wanted to make some people redundant without paying them anything. The workers organised a rota to ensure they guarded the building round the clock to stop their boss bringing scabs in.

And they have won support from the local community. 'We've had food parcels sent to us from the shops in the area,' said Elaine. The action has forced management into talks with the workers' GMB union.
