A week in Palestine video

Issue No. 1825

A WEEK in Palestine is a new documentary about the daily degradation and misery inflicted on the Palestinian people. Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza describe their lives under Israeli occupation to a solidarity delegation of trade unionists and students from Britain.

What you realise is just how rarely the daily lives of the Palestinians are portrayed in the media. This is life under an apartheid system. Students interview their Palestinian counterparts and are told of how difficult it is for them to get into universities – once there, daily curfews impede study and disrupt exams.

In a hospital on the West Bank, health workers talk of how medical supplies are hard to come by and how the number of patients overwhelms them. In a cramped refugee camp on the Gaza Strip young men speak about their lack of hope for the future and friends who have been killed in the intifada, or uprising.

This is a good explanation of why people should support the struggle of the Palestinian people for justice. It deserves to be used in every school, college and workplace.

A Week in Palestine is available for £10 from Unison Office, Middlesex Hospital, Mortimer Street, London W1 1AA. Make cheques payable to 'Palestinian delegation support fund'. Phone or fax 020 7323 1162. All money from the video is being used to fund a delegation of Palestinians to come to Britain.
