POWER IN Numbers is the new album by Jurassic 5, one of the most interesting hip-hop acts in the US at the moment. The group's style is funkier than many of their contemporaries, with more than a nod to the origins of hip-hop in the late 1970s. But Jurassic 5 stand out for another reason.

Lyrics opposing racism are hardly rare among rap artists, but Jurassic 5 make a point of attacking poverty too. They explicitly hit back at the hip-hop establishment and its glorification of guns, violence and sexism. This is their most political album yet. The opening song, 'Freedom', is a call to action.

'It's a sign of the times,' says Mark 7, a members of the band. 'Things are happening in the world and, of course, it affects us on an artistic level.' Power in Numbers is a vibrant urban soundtrack for the growing numbers of people starting to look to the kind of collective solution to inequality that Jurassic 5 rap about.
