AROUND 700 people braved appalling weather to take part an inspiring protest last Saturday in Glasgow. Former Israeli army chief Shaul Mofaz, who led the repression of the second intifada, was blockaded inside a Glasgow hotel.

The Hilton hotel's doors were closed to business as chants of 'Free, free Palestine!' and 'Jenin, Ramallah, never again!' filled the air. Having wrecked the Zionists' dinner party, the demonstrators marched to the Mitchell Theatre for a huge rally. Socialist MSP Tommy Sheridan and campaigning lawyer Aamer Anwar addressed the rally.

The highlight of the rally was a telephone link with Israeli peace campaigner Uri Avneri. Uri told the meeting how he and other Jewish protesters had recently joined Palestinians in a demonstration against the new 'Berlin Wall' which Israel's prime minister, Ariel Sharon, is building between the West Bank and Israel.
