Civil servants

Issue No. 1823

MEMBERS OF the PCS civil servants' union in DEFRA, the merged departments of agriculture and the environment, were surprised to be told on Wednesday of last week that the strike set for Friday had been called off. A pay offer had been made to the core department, but no matching offer had been made to the Rural Payments Agency.

PCS had called a one-day strike in the agency and a half-day strike in core DEFRA. Management caved in and agreed an extension of the time allowed for PCS to call strike action.

The central issue of pay harmonisation throughout the department has not yet been resolved. The prospect of action has not gone away.

THE PCS, Prospect and FDA civil servants' unions in the Cabinet Office have rejected a pay offer. Management has gone back on a promise to resolve pay progression.
