AN INTERNATIONAL protest against the closure of the Sangatte Red Cross refugee camp and the detention of refugees in Europe took place last Saturday. Beginning in Dover, delegations from Britain, France and Belgium crossed the Channel to protest outside the Sangatte camp.

When we arrived, some 200 refugees marched up the road to join us. The refugees told the demonstrators about their experiences of war, oppression and life in the camp. A building set up for 300 now houses nearly 3,500. If Sangatte closes things will get even worse for refugees.
