WE ARE planning to hold a mass protest against privatisation in Newcastle on 2 November. We face radical proposals that will mean the wholesale privatisation of services in the city.
Over the next couple of months the council are planning more school PFI schemes, a city academy for primary and secondary schools, the transfer of housing stock to an arm's length management organisation, and the exploration of a trust for leisure services.
We need a national campaign. The demo and rally are part of building towards this, and part of building for the European Social Forum in Florence. I have been amazed by the response to the campaign so far. At Unison's conference they said there was not a mood for a national demo against privatisation. We want to show that the mood is there. On the day we are going to have speeches about the ESF, from firefighters and from striking rail workers.
