OPPOSITION TO compulsory national SATs tests is as widespread as ever, as discussion at the recent Anti-SATs Alliance conference showed. The conference heard excellent contributions from speakers including academics Rick Hatcher and Bethan Marshall, and from parent Andrew Green.

An international speaker, Jay Rosmer from the Princeton Foundation Review, captivated the audience with his account of how US college entrance tests systematically discriminate against black and Hispanic students.

The conference agreed that we needed to produce material to educate teachers about different ways of assessing students, rather than relying on the SATs, and to develop the arguments around what alternative school system we would like to see.
